![]() ![]() This book is one that can be explored and enjoyed multiple times by caregivers and children. A brief note on the publication details page discusses the legal and environmental implications of planting trees on public lands, but the information is not so prominently displayed as to be useful. The story moves along in pictures and the only words are the ambient sounds-a cat’s meow, the click of a buckle, a woodpecker knocking on a tree. ![]() Details included in the background show a suburban home, an SUV, expensive outdoor equipment, as well as the animals and plants along the hike. Verdict: Though there isn’t much actual story in this richly illustrated picture book, the obvious love between the parent and child comes through. Lunch, celebratory photographs, bird watching, planting a tree-the point of the hike-and then the hike back down the trail and road trip bring the two back home at the end of a long day together. Stylized but detailed illustrations show a brown skinned man and child as they walk through a forest filled with birds and forest animals, crossing streams, always ascending until a rock climb brings them to the top of a ridge. Early scenes show their careful preparation through gathering supplies-food, warm clothing, protective helmets, a compass and map-and the effective use of perspective shows the long road trip out of town and up into the foothills. ![]() ![]() P7Q9Ī father and child get up early to go for a hike in the mountains in this (mostly) wordless picture book. ![]()
